Veg oil Conversion

A diesel to vegetable oil conversion kit allows a diesel vehicle or diesel machinery to fuel with SVO – straight vegetable oil / WVO recycled waste vegetable oil !
This intelligent fuel system warms vegetable oil to ideal fuel temperature and then automatically switches from diesel fuel to vegetable oil power if you have switched the kit on. For very short distances or short running time also on your machinery you would not switch the kit on, you would power these times on diesel.

There are no modifications to the engine necessary, it’s a second fuel supply system that’s integrated in the existing fuel system.
Chemical processing is not required – Just a good source of filtered oil, which can be collected as used cooking oil from restaurants, grown from a variety of crops, or purchased in bulks.
The best suitable vegetable/plant oils as fuel for converted diesel engines are: canola, rapeseed, sunflower, cotton seed, mustard seed, soy, jatropha

Tests and studies have shown that heated vegetable oil has nearly the same properties as diesel fuel and burns just as effectively in most diesel engines.

Based on long-term experiences many diesel engines can be powered with straight vegetable oil after a conversion, provided that the motor is maintained and in good condition (compression, injection system, glow plugs, …).

If you have fitted a 2-tank vegetable oil conversion kit to your diesel car, bus, truck, generator, bobcat, wood chipper etc then you can safe a lot of money by using cleaned used vegetable oil and should you run out of vegetable oil, then you can switch back to diesel at any time. You can also use the empty vegetable oil tank for diesel as a long range tank, provided the tank is suitable for diesel,  you then have to switch the kit on to reach that tank. The conversion kit can also be transferred to another vehicle with the same specifications.

More than 1700 independent scientists agree on one thing: the earth and the life on it is in great danger and we need to act NOW. We don’t have much time left. The scientists confirm that we have started the sixth mass extinction event in approx. 540 million years and that many life forms could be destroyed or endangered by the end of this century.

It’s only 80 years! Visualize it. This is really bad!

Nature revenges our lack of consideration already with extremes in weather, air quality, rising sea-level, reduction of resources, illnesses, extinction of several animals and plants and so forth.

If we don’t act now, it will probably be too late! We can reduce the greenhouse gas pollution much more than most people think. Help us spread the word about using straight vegetable oil as fuel for diesel engines. Diesel engines can run on straight vegetable oil after a second  fuel system has been added which is heated. We use and sell the German ATG conversion kit only because it’s a proven and successful system for more than 20 years. Processed vegetable oil such as canola is critical for human consumption but it is an excellent and environmentally friendly fuel for diesel cars. It is a renewable source. Ideal for older diesel engines not only in cars, but also in buses, trucks, boats, mowers, machinery etc. By using vegetable oil as fuel instead of diesel you reduce the greenhouse gas pollution by 80-90%. If many people would drive their diesel vehicles on vegetable oil, then this would reduce the pollution significantly in an instant.  Furthermore it is more environmentally friendly and cheaper to use an older vehicle, maybe restore it if it needs to be and drive it on pure vegetable oil for a long time than buying a new diesel vehicle which is prone to damage due to the new electronic/sensors/injection system, on which you can’t do the repairs yourself and you most likely will spend a fortune to get it repaired and then you can only drive it on vegetable oil on long distances, not in town or on short trips because of its new technology.

Working green means working environmentally friendly – in our case – using diesel machinery and driving diesel vehicles which are powered with straight vegetable oil to reduce pollution significantly.  (This is NOT biodiesel, this is vegetable oil without any chemicals)

The ATG Vegetable Oil-Kit 2 tank system is suitable for diesel engines with in-line or distributor pumps from Bosch (except for type VP44), Diesel-Kiki, Nippon-Denso or Zexel. Installation The ATG conversion kit is available in 12 and 24 volt models and is supplied with detailed installation instructions.
Following components are included in the delivery: controller (mode auto or manual switching), electric switching unit (tank switching, flush/vent) with integrated electric fuel preheater (Diesel-Therm), temperature switch (regulates the temperature), control electronics (diesel quick purge, acoustic warning), heat exchanger (fitted in water circuit), fuel lines, fuel filter, relays, pre-assembled cable loom with connectors, fuses and protective caps, miscellaneous materials and detailed installation instructions.
Since this is a 2-tank system (1 tank filled with diesel and 1 tank filled with vegetable oil) you can always switch back to diesel, should you run out of vegetable oil.

The ATG Vegetable Oil-Kit is best suitable for diesel engines with in-line or distributor pumps from Bosch (except for type VP44), Diesel-Kiki, Nippon-Denso or Zexel –  these kits are available as DIY kit.
The conversion on diesel engines with Bosch VP44-injection pump and unit injector is only possible by us!
The injection systems Delphi, Lucas, CAV, Stanadyne and Roto-Diesel are not suitable or only suitable to a limited extent for the use of vegetable oil.

FAQ

  • Can my vehicle or machine be converted with the ATG conversion kit?
    The ATG Vegetable Oil conversion Kit is suitable for diesel engines with in-line or distributor pumps from Bosch (except for type VP44), Diesel-Kiki, Nippon-Denso or Zexel. The conversion of diesel engines with Bosch VP44-injection pump and high-pressure fuel injection like unit-injectors pumps is only possible through skilled ATG Conversion Partners.
    The size of the additional fuel tank depends on the vehicle type and the available space. Please don’t hesitate to contact us for further information.
  • Where can I order the conversion kit?
    The conversion kit can be ordered online from our other website www.4x4outdoortuning.com.au or via email or phone.
  • Where can I have my vehicle converted?
    The conversion can be performed by us or by any reputable garage/mechanic. The installation requires an understanding of diesel engines and should be installed by a skilled specialist (e.g. auto mechanic)! Nevertheless a DIY (do-it-yourself) conversion is also possible. A detailed fitting instruction comes with the kit. For your own protection, please check with the appropriate authorities in your country if there are specific rules concerning changes on the vehicle.
  • Is the conversion permanent?
    No, the vehicle can be returned to its original state, e.g. when selling the vehicle. The components can simply be removed within a short time. All of the components can be reused and e.g fitted to another vehicle or machine with the same specs.
  • Are there any long-term studies related to operating diesel vehicles with vegetable oil?
    Yes, tests and studies have shown that heated vegetable oil has nearly the same properties as diesel fuel and burns just as effectively in most engines. Based on past experience almost every diesel engine can be driven with straight vegetable oil after a conversion, provided that the motor is maintained and in good repair (compression, fuel injectors, glow plugs, …).
  • Can the new generation of diesel engines (unit-injectors pumps, common-rail-technology) be operated with vegetable oil?
    In principle yes, it is possible to operate these engines on vegetable oil. However the conversion of diesel engines with high-pressure fuel injection like unit-injectors pumps / common rail diesel only makes sense for long distance driving or long time use in machines. You can still drive on diesel in town or for short time periods. The conversion is only possible through skilled ATG Conversion Partners – that would be us here in Australia.
  • How do injection pumps react operating on vegetable oil?
    Injection pumps from Bosch, Diesel-Kiki, Nippon-Denso or Zexel have shown the best results when operating on vegetable oil. Injection pumps from Delphi, Lucas, CAV, Stanadyne and Roto-Diesel are only partially suitable.
  • Can I operate my vehicle on vegetable oil during the winter months or at freezing temperatures?
    Pure, untreated vegetable oil is getting viscous and sticky at freezing temperatures. Depending on the type and the properties of the vegetable oil, this condition will happen sooner or later. In order to prevent the vegetable oil from gelling in the tank or fuel lines, a mixture of vegetable oil and normal diesel fuel is recommended during the winter months. It is recommended to mix approx. 10% regular diesel to the vegetable oil tank at temperatures starting at 0 degrees Celsius and below.
    (cold pressed rapeseed oil remains liquid up to -15 degrees celcius)
  • How does vegetable oil effect the engine’s properties
    Usually, the engine’s properties (operation, performance, consumption, …) remain the same as with diesel fuel. In many cases the engine runs quieter and smoother on vegetable oil.
  • Does operating an engine on vegetable oil effect its regularly scheduled maintenance?
    As a rule, the maintenance intervals remain the same as with diesel fuel and should be adhered to as specified by the manufacturer.
  • Can parking heaters operate with vegetable oil?
    No, parking heaters are not suitable for operating with vegetable oil. If your vehicle has a parking heater, you should consult with the manufacturer beforehand to see whether an additional conversion is possible. With the two-tank system, parking heaters can still operate on diesel fuel.
  • Can normal diesel fuel be mixed with vegetable oil?
    Yes, normal diesel fuel can be filled in the vegetable oil tank at any ratio.
  • How expensive is vegetable oil and where can I purchase it?
    For smaller amounts such as for private use it is best and most economical to collect waste vegetable oil from take-away shops, restaurants, canteens, etc and clean/filter it down to 1µm before using it. This is what most users in Australia do. We will explain how to clean the used oil with the purchase of a conversion kit.

  • Is it generally permitted to drive using vegetable oil?
    For your own protection, please check with the appropriate authorities in your country/territory if there are specific rules prohibiting the use of vegetable oil. This is also to be done for any changes on the vehicle to be converted.
  • What is the difference between vegetable oil and biodiesel?
    Vegetable Oil
    Vegetable oils are CO2-neutral and free of sulphur and pollutants in their pure, untreated state. The use of straight vegetable oil as fuel reduces the greenhouse gas emissions by 80%.Additional advantages of vegetable oil as fuel
    – inexpensive if you use cleaned used oil
    – nontoxic
    – biodegradable
    – water reactivity 0
    – flash point approx. 300°C (reduces the risk of fire or accident)
    – requires less energy to produce
    – locally produced
    – protection of limited fossil fuels
    – significant reduction of pollution (GHG)

    Biodiesel = Rapsmethylester = RME Biodiesel is chemically produced and substantially more expensive than plain vegetable oil. A problem is the durability of plastic and rubber components (sealings), which come into contact with biodiesel. If biodiesel is used in a system that has not been adapted, leakages on the fuel system and defects on injection pumps are the most frequently troubles.

When using pure, untreated vegetable oil, these problems will not occur.

The Technology and Support Centre (TFZ) is an institution of the Bavarian Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Forestry in Germany”

The TFZ has tested the emissions on a plant oil compatible tractor and has published a test result document which can be downloaded.
